What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If the toilet won’t flush and there’s no clog, check the tank parts and water supply. Most issues come from the handle linkage, flapper, fill valve, or low tank water level.

Quick checks:

  • Lift the tank lid and confirm the chain has slight slack and the flapper seals flat.
  • Open the shutoff valve fully and ensure the tank refills to the marked line.
  • Make sure the refill tube is aimed into the overflow tube.
  • Raise the float slightly if water level is low.
  • If parts are worn, replacement is usually quick.
