Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling Properly?

Your AC can run but not cool if airflow is blocked, the thermostat is set wrong, or the system has a refrigerant or coil problem. Dirty filters, a clogged outdoor condenser, or leaky ductwork also reduce cooling. If it’s cycling but lukewarm, the coil may be iced or the charge low.

Quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to Cool and lower 3–5 degrees.
  • Replace/clean the filter.
  • Clear leaves/debris around the outdoor unit.
  • Look for ice on lines; if iced, turn system off and run Fan.
